Yarn Ball Chandeliers

Nowadays, other than the balloon-filled ceiling, more and more parents are looking for alternative ways to make their party unique. Paper pompoms, medallions, buntings and lanterns are quickly becoming the favorites along side polka dots, chevron, ruffles and ombre. Minimalism is now the trend in party styling.      

While browsing the internet, I stumble upon these whimsical Yarn Ball Chandeliers. What I love about these is that you can use them in different occasions-from children’s parties to weddings! Making them in various brightly colored yarns will surely bring extra fun and excitement into your party, while if you’re aiming for elegance and sophistication, simply make them in 1 or 2 colors max. They are fun and easy to do, and best of all, budget friendly! Just a little warning though, this little project here is quite MESSY to do, so prepare to cover your floor with used tarp or garbage bags. (read: hand covered with glue/cornstarch mixture and mixture dripping all over the floor and splashing everywhere)

Materials:

• Yarn
• School Glue
• Corn Starch
• Petroleum Jelly or Cooking spray
• Rod/Pole for hanging
• Scissors
• Balloons
• Bowl for Mixing
• Clear fast drying spray paint

Blow up the balloon to a medium size so the shape is a little rounder.

Cover your working area with tarp. Hang the rod or pole by placing it between two chairs. Suspend the balloons by it with strings. Remember, if you choose to do this outdoor, be sure to consider the weather condition such wind and rain.

Mix the following materials: 4oz School Glue, ½ cup of cornstarch, and ¼ cup of warm water together until it has smooth texture. Tip: The Corn Starch will be the main material in creating a rock solid chandelier so make sure not to put water too much. You can add more corn starch and glue to thicken up the mixture.

Smear the petroleum jelly all over the balloon. This will prevent the yarn to stick on the balloon after dry.

With the help of your friends, one of you will be feeding the yarn to the mixture then pass it to the other who will then wrap it around the balloon. Tip: Squeeze out some mixture before wrapping.
Slowly, wrap the yarn around the balloon vertically and gradually switch the wrapping horizontally. Tip: For seamless look, tuck the start and end pieces of yarn beneath the other pieces.

Wait for 24 hours before popping out the balloon. Use stick to poke the glue crystals that developed between yarns. Tip: The longer you wait, the stronger your chandelier will be.
Lastly, spray the ball with clear fast drying spray paint outdoors. Tip: If you want bolder colors, you can use colored spray paint or craft paint also.
